Background

The organization supports professional development and in particular has supported nurses to attain certification in their specialty. We pay for initial certification and the nursing directors budget for this in their annual education budgets. (See Exhibit SE3EO.1).

Goal

• Increase professional certification across the Hospital by 2.5% from the baseline each year 2012 and 2013
• Increase professional certification in the Birthing Center from the baseline by 2% from the baseline each year 2012 and 2013

Description/Interventions

1. Initial certifications are paid for by the organization-(see Exhibit SE3EO.1- HR.06.003.05 Certification for Registered Nurses, Hospital)
2. Certification is a criteria in our professional advancement scale (see Exhibit SE3EO.2 - Professional Advancement Scale requirements).
3. Added requirement for certification to all charge nurse job descriptions with an expectation that all charge nurses will be certified within 1 year of eligibility (see Exhibit SE3EO.3- Charge Nurse Job Description).
4. In 2012, we added PEARLS certification review to our Continuing Education (CE) Direct electronic education package to further support nurses both certifying for the first time and those requiring continuing education credits for re-certification.  (See Exhibit SE3EO.4  -screen shots of CE Direct Pearls review). 

Results

Organization Results

The graph demonstrates that the organization exceeded its goal of increasing the percentage of professional nursing certification by 2.5% per year between 2011 and 2013.

Unit Results- Birthing Center

The graph demonstrates that the Birthing Center met its goal of increasing the percentage of professional nursing certifications in year one by increasing from 48% to 50% and exceeded its goal in year 2 by increasing from 50-64%.
