Background

Thompson Health acknowledges the valuable contributions of its Associates, our most prized asset, through a variety of Associate focused celebrations and recognitions.  

Our Strategic Plan goals include:

  • Align access to care to improve the health status of the community

Example One - Clinical Nurse Recognition

Cardiac Rehabilitation Nurse receives National Recognition for her contribution to the community

Mary Allhusen, RN-BC was one of the nurses behind the development of a cardiac rehabilitation program at Thompson. She works with patients on a daily basis to maximize their health after a cardiac event. In addition Mary helps to run the Mended Hearts group, bringing education and support to patients and families affected by cardiac disease.

 

Patients with cardiac disease often have to make significant lifestyle changes to support their continued health.  Mary has been instrumental in bringing new and exciting opportunities for patients with cardiac disease and their families to support health and wellbeing. Most notable are the "mall walkers" program and the recent DASH diet program, discussed in SE9, in collaboration with local businesses and the New York Wine and Culinary Center. Mary constantly strives to improve customer experience, evaluating and re-designing programs to deliver customer centered care.   

In 2012, Mary received the Sydney & Helen Shuman Nurse Recognition Award by the President of the Rochester chapter of Mended Hearts. Mary was one of only two nurses nationwide to receive this prestigious award.

Example Two- Recognition of a Group of nurses

Recognition for eliminating hospital acquired infections for greater than 100 days

In 2012 we began tracking "days since last hospital acquired infection" by unit. Our visual management system on the floors displays this data to associates, patients, visitors, and medical staff. A threshold of 100 days since last infection was set as the data point to receive recognition. Our Director of Infection Control and Emergency Preparedness, Gloria Karr, MS, RN-BC, CIC tracks achievements and submits the nomination paperwork necessary to set a RANSAC in process.  RANSAC stands for Recognize Associates Now by the Socialization Action Committee (SAC), which includes associates from across the organization and members of the Executive Team.

Since the inception of tracking, we have recognized three nursing units for meeting the 100 day infection free goals.  Each department received a RANSAC. A RANSAC is done in the department being recognized. The members of the department gather to hear why they are being recognized and receive their certificate.  This public recognition is part of our culture at Thompson.

 Nursing Departments recognized for 100 days infection free:

  • 2 West, Medical Surgical 7/8/12 and 7/16/13
  • Birthing Center, Obstetrical Nursing 10/1/12 and 7/16/13
  • Emergency Department recognized for one year without a hospital acquired infections 5/31/13, see Attachment SE11a.
